Sanding & Tooling Technician (Foundry)

Reports To: Production Supervisor / Foundry Manager

Position Summary

The Face Sanding & Tooling Technician is responsible for finishing cast metal products by grinding, sanding, and preparing surfaces to meet quality specifications. This position also involves maintaining, repairing, and setting up tooling, fixtures, and equipment used throughout the foundry production process. The technician ensures castings meet dimensional and cosmetic standards while maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform face sanding, grinding, deburring, and surface finishing of castings using hand and power tools.
  • Remove excess material, flash, gates, risers, and other imperfections from cast products.
  • Inspect castings for surface defects and report quality concerns to supervisors or quality personnel.
  • Set up, maintain, repair, and modify tooling, fixtures, jigs, and molds as required.
  • Read and interpret work instructions, and production specifications.
  • Use measuring tools.
  • Assist with mold and pattern changes to support production schedules.
  • Maintain grinding and sanding equipment, including routine inspections and minor repairs.
  • Follow all foundry safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Keep work areas clean and organized in accordance with 6S standards.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to quality, productivity, and safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous foundry, manufacturing, metal finishing, or tooling experience preferred.
  • Ability to safely operate grinders, sanders, pneumatic tools, and other foundry equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand work instructions, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be willing to cross train 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work in a foundry environment with exposure to dust, heat, noise, and vibration.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, respirators, gloves, and steel-toed footwear.

Working Conditions

  • Industrial foundry environment.
  • Exposure to molten metal operations, grinding dust, elevated temperatures, and production equipment.
  • Overtime and weekend work may be required based on production demands.

Pay Grade: Based on experience and qualifications.
